Spectacles for Ben
As the story goes, Ben Franklin had poor vision and needed glasses to read. He got tired of constantly taking them off and putting them back on, so he decided to figure out a way to make his glasses let him see both near and far. He had two pairs of spectacles cut in half and put half of each lens in a single frame. Today, we call them bifocals.
A year ago, Jason Scott, Principal of Ben Franklin Elementary School in Corona, conducted a presentation for the Corona Host Lions Club. It was at this time that Lions Club member Larry Hegg asked if the school could collect old prescription eyeglasses for his club. He said the frames are used to provide glasses for needing individuals. Mr. Scott thought it would be fitting to participate in the Lions' Club Vision Program with Ben Franklin's birthday celebration, for Ben Franklin, so Franklin Elementary School held a Spectacles for Ben collection.
Students and parents were encouraged to turn in any old prescription glasses in honor of Ben Franklin's birthday on January 17. This is the first year Ben Franklin School has collected old glasses and 21 pairs were turned in. "This is not a tremendous number, but, if it means that 21 people are able to receive glasses that might not have been able to afford them, it is huge success," Mr. Scott commented.
