Nick Schwartz, Short Tribute on the Occasion of his induction as a "Melvin Jones" awardee, Lions Club's highest honor.
As a Lion Nick Schwartz attended most all meetings, sat next to me at our luncheon meetings, and only gradually, as our evolving friendship warranted did I become privy to Nick's outstanding humanness', the apotheosis of a quality life. Only the gods know the extent of this quality, but my dim introspection bears this statement out. As a ten or eleven year old boy Nick immigrated to this Country from Hungary. His family settled in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, where his father was the Rebbe of a nascent community of immigrant Jews. At age sixteen, perhaps, he moved to New York City. The War: -- Nick enlisted, became a Medic, and although he has eschewed any honor or tribute, I learned that Medic Nick ascended the cliffs at Omaha Beach in the third or fifth wave. My only clue came one day at "Lions" when Lion Nick told me: "Jack, did you see the picture, 'Saving Private Ryan?'" "It realistically depicts the War." The French Government has acknowledged Nick's service with a Special Commendation. For over fifty years, Lion Nick has operated a furniture store here in Corona. His compassion in furniture store dealings is unassailed. His taciturn reservation extends to our Lions Club where Lion Nick has quietly served in every capacity. If we give him the "Melvin Jones", what do the gods have in store for him?
