Title: Frank Emerson, Sr.
By: John Prichard
Bio: For those of you Lions who are interested in history and are willing to accept my shadowy account of history, I write the following: Last week, I had mentioned the late Lion, former President of our Lions Club, Frank Emerson, Senior. Lion Frank Emerson Junior is a current member of our club, and we can assume that modesty or perhaps awe prevents him from commenting on his father. FRANK EMERSON, SENIOR: Frank Emerson senior was a long time Lion, one of those bubbling enablers who, when speaking was always listened to, because he was funny, witty and amusing; his humor was always innocent and free of invective, but still pointed and directed. He was a master "Master of Ceremonies". Listen to Lion Frankie, junior, (current Lion Tamer, as he collects those fines), and you will grasp the essence of my thought. --- Lion Frank Emerson, Senior, had that crisp, cropped upper lip mustache. I often wondered if he were emulating the late Clark Gable. (Clark Gable, movie star, suprema in those days) Lion Frank Senior was post master in those early days. Corona only had one post office in those early days. And, here's the story, as I learned it early on in gossipy street parlance. (Please feel free to correct me, if I am wrong, Lion Frankie, Junior.). Lion, former President of our Lions Club, Frank Emerson, Senior was a Democrat. That label signifies a group, whose political adversaries are Republicans. The differences and animosities between these two groups often reach screeching proportions. In 1932 most influential Coronans, the political tide, so to speak, were republicans. As a loyal democrat, Lion Frank, Senior worked for the party. Franklin Roosevelt, a democrat won the presidential election in November 1932 by a landslide. Herbert Hoover, the Republican, was the victim, the looser. To the winners, the spoils: Loyal Democrat, Frank Emerson, Senior was appointed Post Master of Corona, a position which he held admirably for many many years. - A master administrator in addition to his charming wit. -- Now, all you newcomers, (You "Comheres") as they say of new commers in Chincoteague, Virginia, must recall that in those days, Corona's population was less than ten thousand. In 1965 then Lion Frank Emerson, Senior, President of our Lions Club, wrote a charming introduction to our first Lions Club Directory.
