| Bio: |
If we had one, Virgil Maw would be a prime candidate for Corona's Poet Laureate. He's old enough now to weigh his legacy, and I am going out on a limb to surmise that he would like to be remembered as such. In any event, the following autobiography is appended along with his most famous poem. "The Corona Coffee Clatch Defrocked". Half in jest, the Corona Coffee Clatch of days past, of days before the "Hatch Act", was believed to be the "Raj" of Corona. And, half not in jest, the Corona Coffee Clatch was believed to be the "Raj" of Corona. This was the Corona Coffee Clatch which met in Cunning's Drug Store, now a parking lot with a Palm Tree just across from the Law Building at 6th and Main.
THE LIONS CLUB CONNECTION: Virgil Maw was a Member of Corona Host Lions for forty years. Of the sixteen members described in the doggerel, eleven were past presidents of Corona Host Lions Club. -----Elvin Downs, Dutch Velthoen, Charlie Verity, Leo Benedict, John Colladay, Roger Miller, Bill Munn, Bill Bass, Don Pengra, Jack Crandell and Tom Gunderson. It could be said, indeed it has been said that the Corona Host Lions Club "Ran Corona" in those early days.
In any event, please enjoy the "Poem" of the newly anointed Poet Laureate of Corona.
